Senior Patrol Leader elections are coming up on Aug 22nd. Submit your resumes to Mr. Mayhew! Must be Star or higher rank currently. New patrol assignments will follow the elections.

Phillip Z's Eagle project is this Saturday, Aug 6th.

A memorial service for Jim McClure, the troop's 3rd Scoutmaster, will be held on August 6th at St Marks on the Mesa Church, 11 AM.

The Durango Family Camp will be on the 19th to 21st. Signups continue. Patrols are to work up a menu set.

September camp will be at Elephant Butte Lake.

Sunset Memorial Park Veteran's Grave Decoration service project is Sunday, May 29th, from 1 to 3 PM.

Tonight was Christopher's last day, as his family is being assigned to a base in Germany. Good luck, Scout!

Our equipment checkout day will be June 4th, starting at 8AM. And Peter H. will have his Eagle Project at our June 24-26 campout in the Jemez.

Scouts who went on the Sumner Lake campout need to make sure they have paid the $20 camp fee, and adults an additional $13 food charge.

A great trek in the snow prep hike was held Sunday. Next Saturday, the South Crest Trail will be tackled starting at 7 AM.

Coming up May 21 and 28 is Joe B's Eagle Project at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, at Lomas and Morningside.

The First Class swimming test will be given at the Sandia Pool at 6 PM next Monday (May 9).

The second preparation hike for the Gila Trek will be held on Saturday, on the Upper Faulty trail. Meet at the trailhead at 7 AM.

The April campout at San Lorenzo Canyon near Socorro will pack at 5 PM Friday, and leave by 6 PM. Totin' Chip and some other basic skills will be taught. Back about 1 PM Sunday. Bring a hat and sunscreen!

January 31, 2011 Meeting

Instruction on lashings was held, led by Don L and Will W.

The canoe prep trip on Saturday discovered a beaver living along the Rio Grande - quite a nice bit of wildlife spotting! Next prep trip will be on Sunday, Feb. 6th, starting at the Church at 9:30 AM. Sign up by email to Mr. Mortimer. The canoe trek location has been definitively set - the trip will run Utah's Colorado River from Moab to the confluence with the Colorado. A $50 initial payment is due now.

Several Boards of Review consumed most of the advancement time, resulting in the following rank advancements:

Next week's meeting will be held at Apache Elementary School, 12800 Copper Blvd. Meeting time is standard - 7 to 9 PM. The reason for meeting there - this is where Mr. Prentice's wonderful displays of waterfowl and animal mounts are kept.

Scouting for Food will pass out collection bags on this coming Saturday, January 5th, starting at the Church at 10 AM. Then on the 12th, we'll collect food donations during that same time window. This is just another great way to earn service hours!

We filled the task sign up sheet for the upcoming Scout Sunday on February 13th! Thanks, and if you have to back out, please arrange for a replacement Scout to take your place and notify Mr. Coles.

The canoe prep outing on Saturday went very well, with no one being lost in the river (or even tipped over). The second trip will be in two weeks, on Saturday January 29th.

Tonight was a Webelos Scout open house. About 30 Webelos Scouts enjoyed displays, demonstrations and free food from Troop 285.

Signups were taken for Saturday's Nature Hike (specifically for Webelos Scouts),
for Saturday's canoe prep trip on the Rio Grande, and Klondike campout coming up next weekend.

Also coming up soon: on January 22nd, the District Awards Dinner. On January 24th, our annual Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention briefing.

January 3, 2011 meeting

Upcoming outings include a Webelos Nature Hike on January 15th, which needs Scout support to recruit new Scouts to Troop 285; the first canoe trek preparation activity on January 15th; and Klondike Campout coming up on January 22 and 23rd.

Next Monday (10th) will be an Open House for Cub Scouts to visit Troop 285.

Instruction on stocking the Patrol chuck box was held by Staff.

We will be doing the Holiday Food Gathering project on December 18th, to feed about 8 families.

One final day of extension was granted for Thunderbird Times articles - they HAVE to be in to Mr. Howard by Tuesday evening.

Several Scouts still owe $10 fees for the Bosque camp. Please pay Mrs. M.

On December 10th, retired Judge Jewell will conduct citizenship rights and responsibilities training for Basic Skills, and as a review for older scouts. Please attend, as this will probably be the only such formal class this year!

Instruction period consisted of knots and lashings review by Mr. Mayhew.

Kawai will be collecting toiletry items for a women's prison next week. All kinds of items are welcome, except razors.

This weekend is the Bosque Del Apache campout, near Socorro. We'll pack at 5 PM on Friday (note new days) and leave Saturday morning early. Patrols finished preparing menus, and got instruction on cold weather camping techniques.

A Troop Committee meeting is on Tuesday, 7 PM. All adults are invited to help set policy and hear an important message from Scoutmaster Mike Mayhew.

2011 registration fees are due on November 22nd.

The last night for advancement for the Fall Court of Honor will be November 29th. Wrap up those merit badges!

Remember the La Mesa Presbyterian Feast of Love service project coming up on Nov 24th and 25th.

Bosque del Apache campout is coming up on the Nov 19-21 weekend.

A Life-to-Eagle conference will be held on Thursday, Nov 4th, 7 PM at Sombra Del Monte meeting hall. All Scouts working toward Eagle in the next year ought to attend.

Bandelier campout last weekend went well, according to the many attendees. The camp fees which need to be paid are $10 per Scout and $20 per adult.

A District Life to Eagle seminar will be held on November 4th, starting at 7 PM, at Sombra Del Monte Christian Church.

IOLS (Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills) training for adults will be held next weekend.

A Den Chief training class will be offered on Saturday, November 6th, all day. The fee for the class will be picked up by the Troop. We could use several younger Scouts working as Den Chiefs to assist several local Packs and introduce the Webelos to Troop 285.

The Troop decided to participate in a popcorn Show-n-Sell at the Sandia Laboratories Credit Union on November 6th.

The Gathering of Eagles and Court of Honor for Phillip Mayhew was a great success on Saturday, Oct. 16th. If you missed buying a Memory Book from the hands of over one hundred of our Eagles, you can get your copy from Mr. Stein for $15.00.

Popcorn sales ended with a total sales of $15,130! Since our goal was $12,000, we have succeeded greatly! Popcorn will be ready for pickup on Friday evening from 5 to 9 PM, at Mr. Sparks house. Directions to his house will be sent by email - watch for it.

Bandelier Campout is coming up this weekend. This is a recruitment camp, and several Webelos Scouts will be joining us. We will pack gear on Friday at 5 PM, and drive up starting at 6:30 AM on Saturday, with a return on Sunday. Pack with changing weather in mind, and include a warm coat, and stocking cap for sleeping.

The Troop Committee will meet on Oct 19th at 7PM.

Pack 181 has asked if Troop 285 could provide one or more Den Chiefs. This is a great opportunity for a Leadership award if you are not a Patrol Leader or Staff member!

Philmont Trek is almost a 100% lock at this point for 2011. Trekkers need to be 14 years old by September 1st, 2011. The total cost will be about $740 for the 10 day trek.

Next week is the Open House for Webelos visitors. Patrols can start setting up at 6 PM. One patrol may cook.

Popcorn sales are at $12,150 and a couple of weeks are still left! This is already exceeding our goal for this year! Congrats, guys!

There will be a Rifle Shooting merit badge shooting time at the City range at 1:30 PM on Sunday (Oct 10th), led by Mr. Sparks.

On April 2nd, Mr. Mayhew will be starting Swimming merit badge. On March 18th, there will be practice and testing for Basic Skills swimming requirements. If you want to take Swimming Merit Badge, you need to have the First Class Swimmer qualification.

There will be a CPR training class on March 3rd. First Aid merit badge students get first shot at the class.
Next Monday (Feb. 26) will be the last night for advancement for the upcoming Court of Honor.
Sam L. is holding his Eagle project next Sunday, a blood drive at Sombra Del Monte Christian Church from 9 AM to 2 PM.
